If you’re standing in a breeder’s living room right now, phone in hand, trying to decide between two goldendoodle puppies from the same litter — one with a loose, wavy coat and one with tight curls — you’re actually looking at the shedding answer already. It’s just written in fur instead of words.

I get some version of this call a lot: an owner three days out from bringing home a doodle puppy, suddenly worried they made a mistake, because their neighbor’s “goldendoodle” sheds all over the couch and theirs was supposed to be the non-shedding kind. It’s a fair worry, and it’s also a solvable one, because the answer isn’t hiding in the breed name. It’s hiding in the genes.

The generation label doesn’t tell you what you think it does

“F1,” “F1B,” “multigen” — these labels describe ancestry, not coat outcome. An F1 goldendoodle is a straight cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, and because coat genes sort independently in that first generation, an F1 litter can produce puppies with anything from a flat, shedding coat to a loose wave to something close to a Poodle’s curl. Breeding further generations back toward Poodle (an F1B, for instance) shifts the odds toward lower shedding, but it doesn’t guarantee it. Odds aren’t a promise, and I’ve had to explain that distinction more than once to a disappointed client standing in my exam room with a very fluffy, very shedding dog.

What actually decides the outcome are two specific genes, and they’re testable before you ever commit to a puppy.

The furnishings gene is doing most of the work

According to the American Kennel Club, coat length and texture in dogs are governed by a small number of identifiable genes, and the “furnishings” gene — the one responsible for the mustache-and-eyebrow look you see on Poodles and wire-coated breeds — is one of the most consequential for shedding. A dog with two copies of the furnishings variant typically grows the long facial hair and dense undercoat texture that sheds very little; a dog with zero copies grows a Golden-Retriever-style coat that sheds seasonally like any double-coated retriever. One copy usually lands somewhere in between — noticeably furnished, but shedding more than a two-copy dog.

That’s the gene most breeders mean when they talk about a puppy being “improperly coated.” It has nothing to do with how many generations back the Poodle is in the pedigree. A puppy with zero furnishings copies can appear in an F3 litter just as easily as an F1 litter, if both parents happen to carry an unfurnished copy to pass along.

Shedding itself is a separate, additive trait

Furnishings tell you about texture and facial hair, but shedding volume is its own measurable trait, and it’s influenced by more than one gene working together. The UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory offers a dedicated shedding panel because coat length and furnishings alone don’t fully predict how much hair a dog will actually leave on your floor — a separate shedding-associated variant adds to or subtracts from the effect of the furnishings gene. In practical terms, that means two furnished, curly-coated littermates can still shed at noticeably different rates, because they inherited different combinations at this second gene.

This is the part that trips people up. They assume “curly coat” and “low shedding” are the same thing. They’re related, but they’re not identical, and a dog can have a lovely wavy Poodle-like coat and still shed more than an owner expected because of what’s happening at that second locus.

What I tell owners before they pick a puppy

In my practice, the conversation that saves the most heartache happens before the puppy ever comes home. I had a family come in a few months ago with two goldendoodle littermates they were choosing between — a nine-week-old female with a flat, slightly wavy coat and her brother with dense, curly furnishings around his muzzle. The mother had a wool allergy history in the family and wanted the lower-shedding option, understandably. I couldn’t tell them anything definitive by looking — coat can shift some as a puppy grows into its adult texture — but I could tell them that a coat DNA panel, run through a lab like Embark or UC Davis, would answer the furnishings and shedding-gene question directly rather than by guesswork. They tested the litter through their breeder’s records a week later: the curlier brother carried two furnishings copies and the low-shed variant, the sister carried only one furnishings copy. They went with the brother. Eighteen months later, the family’s asthmatic teenager still hasn’t had a flare from the dog’s coat, though I’m always careful to tell allergy-prone families that furnishings reduce loose hair and dander spread — they don’t make a dog allergen-free.

So, does your goldendoodle shed?

If your goldendoodle has full facial furnishings — a visible beard, mustache, and bushy eyebrows — and a wavy-to-curly coat texture, they almost certainly carry at least one copy of the furnishings gene, and probably shed lightly to moderately, more like brushing out a sweater than vacuuming a couch. If your goldendoodle has a flatter, feathered coat with no beard, closer to what you’d see on a Golden Retriever, they likely inherited zero furnishings copies and will shed on a seasonal double-coat pattern regardless of what the breeder called the litter.

Neither coat is a health problem, and neither is a mistake — but if shedding volume matters to your household, a coat panel from your breeder or a home DNA kit answers the question with far more certainty than a generation label or a breeder’s promise ever will.
